A room on Main Street.
Salon Excuria has spent a long time doing one thing in one place: looking after the hair, skin and nails of people in Williamsville and the towns around it. The shelf came later, and only because our clients kept asking for it.
How the shelf started.
For years the same conversation happened in the chair. Someone would mention a supplement they had seen advertised, ask whether it was any good, and we would have to say that we had no idea. Eventually we decided that if we were going to be asked, we should be able to answer — or be honest that we could not.
So we started reading labels the way we read the back of a colour tube. We asked suppliers for the supplement facts panel and the certificate of analysis before we asked for a price. We turned down almost everything. What survived went on one narrow shelf near the front desk, where anyone could pick it up and read it without being sold to.
It is a small part of what we do, and it is meant to stay that way. A salon that starts making its money from bottles stops being a salon. The shelf pays for itself, it gives our clients somewhere honest to buy from, and that is the whole ambition for it.
Selling the same shelf online was the obvious next step. The pages you are reading are the same shelf, with the same short list of things we are and are not willing to say about it.
Three people, one front desk.
Marguerite Sowa
Owner
Opened the salon, still takes clients four days a week, and signs off on anything that goes on the shelf. If a supplier wants a hearing, they get it from her, usually at eight in the morning before the first appointment.
Alina Petrescu
Shelf & suppliers
Handles the paperwork nobody enjoys: panels, certificates of analysis, lot numbers, best-before dates, returns and the online orders. She packs the parcels herself, which is why they only go out on salon days.

Front desk
Answers support@salonexcuria.com, books the chairs, and is the person who will read a label back to you over email. If your question turns out to be a medical one, he is also the person who will tell you so.
Four gates, and most things fail the first.

01
The panel first
Before price, before margin, before anything: send us the supplement facts panel. If it is not legible, or the amounts hide inside a proprietary blend, the conversation ends there.
-
02
Who actually makes it
We ask for the manufacturing facility, its third-party audit status and a recent certificate of analysis for the lot we would be buying. A brand that cannot name its own factory does not go on the shelf.
-
03
How it is advertised
We read the supplier's own marketing. If the carton, the website or the sales deck makes claims a dietary supplement is not allowed to make, we decline — however good the product may be.

04
One case, one season
Anything that survives arrives as a single case and sits by the desk for a season. If it only moves when it is talked up, it goes back and we say so.
We are not a laboratory and we do not test anything ourselves. What we can do is read documents carefully, ask uncomfortable questions and keep the answers on file. Ask us for what we hold on MindBloom and we will send it.
How a salon ended up with a website.
Nothing here happened quickly. That is rather the point of the place.
- In the beginning
- Two chairs, one basin and a rented room on 5725 Main Street. Colour, cuts and the occasional wedding party.
- The treatment room
- The room at the back was added for facials and nails, which is when clients started staying long enough to ask us questions about everything else.
- The first shelf
- A narrow run of shelving by the front desk, put up to hold the two products we were prepared to vouch for. It has never been much bigger than that.
- Paperwork before price
- The rule that a supplier sends the panel and the certificate of analysis before we discuss money. It removed most of our suppliers and improved the shelf considerably.
- Orders by post
- Clients who had moved away began asking us to post bottles to them. For a while we did it by hand, from the front desk, with a paper receipt.
- This website
- salonexcuria.com is that same arrangement, made orderly. Same shelf, same rules, same three people answering the email.

Nothing on our shelf is a treatment. We say that to clients in the chair, so we say it here too.
SALON EXCURIA INC · Williamsville, NYWe are not a clinic, a pharmacy or a medical practice. Nobody here is qualified to diagnose anything, to advise on medication, or to tell you whether a supplement is right for your body. When a question needs a clinician, we will say so and stop there.
We are also not a supplement company. We did not formulate MindBloom, we do not manufacture it and we have no laboratory. We are a salon that buys a small quantity of it, keeps the paperwork, and sells it to people who ask.
